project details
The
Mirror Art Group is a non-profit organisation working in the Chiang Rai
region, which runs a number of projects to help the hill tribes achieve
a better life for themselves, whilst still retaining their cultural
identities.
In
recent years, many villagers have been forced to relocate by the
government, and are now struggling to survive in their new world.
Several villages lack the simple basics of a water supply and
electricity, and the children find it difficult to fit in at school,
where they are expected to speak Thai (which is not their native
tongue), and to learn in ways which they have never before been exposed
to. IN your weeks stay, you can get involved in projects such as helping
to construct water tanks, teaching English to the villagers, replanting
trees and helping at local schools.
The
overall aim is to assist strong, active hill tribe communities achieve a
beneficial coexistence with lowland Thai society and combat issues such
as drug abuse, erosion of culture and trafficking of women and children.
There
will be other opportunities to assist the Akha in a number of ways, from
working with them on e-commerce and IT infrastructure, teaching and
entertaining the local children, working on a database which is used to
assist the Akha achieve Thai citizenship, and generally working to
improve the infrastructure of the village. |
