Kenyan Working Safari

13 nights, from £1750 (flights included)

The Swahili word ‘Safari’ translates as ‘Journey’ and your 'Safari' will be exactly that. A journey which will take you from the white sands of the Indian Ocean south of Mombasa, inland to the vast bushland of Tsavo to see some of the best wildlife viewing Africa has to offer.  Unlike the typical tourist routes, you will spend five days working on coastal community projects - all benefiting local people, with a further five days on a working safari in an area densely populated by elephants, finishing off with spectacular 'Big Five’ game viewing in the Tsavo East National Park and some time to relax on the beach.

makongeni (coastal camp)

Your adventure begins just south of Mombasa, at the Makongeni Camp which is your base for  four days spent working with the local villagers (who live in what can only be described as 'jungle-beach' villages), on a variety of community development projects, ranging from teaching, building and refurburbishing classrooms to planting trees and making desks. The work is 'full-on', but great fun. You will need to be prepared to get hot and sweaty (and probably covered in paint as well), but satisfaction is guaranteed - especially as the local children are almost certain to want to lend a hand!

Our partners in Kenya have an excellent policy of not only employing local labour - providing much needed employment, but actively funding and contributing to the infrastructure of the local villages. Your holiday in Kenya will make sure you take home fantastic memories, but leave behind something that will benefit the people who have welcomed you into their world.

Some basic Swahili lessons will be also be given to help you to make the most of this incredible experience. Accommodation is in well-equipped tents with shared facilities.

mwaluganje elephant sanctuary (working safari)

Your next stop is the Shimba Hills region, and Camp Mwaluganje is your base for three days of living amongst the world’s densest population of elephants! You will have the unique opportunity to get involved with projects such as elephant identification, game trail marking and GPS mapping — all to help preserve the elephants and the local communities by reducing the impact of human and wildlife contact.

satao rock / taita ranch / tsavao east - (big game safari)

Time to enjoy the activities of a more traditional ‘safari’, with jeep rides to view the ‘Big Five’ and nights spent overlooking waterholes where cheetah, warthog, impala and baboons amongst others, come for refreshment. For two nights enjoy the luxury offered in your ensuite tents and appreciate the spectacular views of an African sunset from the comfort of your verandah.

back to the beach!

Enjoy a final couple of days back at Camp Makongeni, catching up with friends and relaxing on the shores on the Indian Ocean.  Take the opportunity to go game fishing, try a scuba dive, perhaps visit the city of Mombasa for some last-minute shopping, or simply soak up the rays!

There is plenty of night-time entertainment for the young at heart - bars, clubs and discos aplenty.

Foe the even more adventurous, we can arrange post-project travel or excursions ranging from extra days relaxing on the beach through to a week spent climbing the spectacular Kilimanjaro.
