The concept of Different Travel came about as a result of the Asian tsunami of December 2004. So many people wanted to do something more than give money, but didn't know how. Different Travel was therefore initially established to give those who wished to use their holidays to work on tsunami relief projects an opportunity to do so.

However, the concept has been so popular that it is currently being expanded to include projects not directly related to the tsunami.

The concept is simple. We combine the best bits of a traditional holiday in some of the world's most beautiful places, and add to them opportunities to help out on humanitarian, environmental and social programmes.

You can combine sight-seeing and relaxing on a beach, with helping out in an orphanage, have a go at teaching, or even help build a house! You can even do independent pre, post or mid-project travelling, which we would be delighted to arrange for you.

The projects are managed by non-governmental organisations, charities, local organisations and individuals. The hotels we use are all vetted for their level of service, environmentally sustainable practices and links to the local community.

By spending your holiday in the developing world, you will be assisting the local economy. Simply by staying in a local hotel, eating in local restaurants, employing local guides or taxi drivers, and buying local handicrafts and products, you will be helping people in the developing world to achieve self-sufficiency.
