The historic capital of Nepal, Kathmandu has long captured the imagination of travellers worldwide. It is a living museum, with a unique experience around each corner. Literally hundreds of Hindu temples sit alongside Buddhist stupas and Tibetan monasteries, with their evocative prayer flags flying in the breeze. Enjoy sights such as Durbar Square, Swayambunath Stupa and Pashupatinath, as well as enjoying a traditional Nepali meal and cultural show.

nukawat

Located just 75 kms from Kathmandu, this historic town was once the capital of the Valley in the days before the unification of Nepal.  Spend four days living amongst the variety of ethnic groups which make up the local population, assisting on a range of community development projects ranging from teaching English, to helping restore heritage buildings.

lhasa

Return to Kathmandu to collect your Tibetan visa before boarding a plane for what must be one of the most spectacular flights in the world!  Lhasa is situated 3660m above sea level, so it is advisable to take it easy and acclimatise yourself to the altitude.  You have two full days to explore the gems of this fascinating city, including the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple.

4WD overland from Lhasa to Kathmandu

Board your landcruiser and head into the mountains along the Friendship Highway. Cross some of the world’s highest passes (reaching heights of 5200m), view huge glaciers at close quarters, cross the arid Tibetan plateau, and view the snowy summits of peaks which climb to 7500m! Stay in Tibet’s second largest city, Shigatse, and visit vibrant markets, thriving monasteries, ancient forts and colourful Tibetan villages.  Gradually descend from he Himalayan heights to re-enter Nepal at Zhangmu,  and cross the Friendship Bridge towards Kathmandu where your journey ends and, after a final night it’s time for your flight home.

project details

The ‘Explore Himalaya Community Service programme’ was developed to assist impoverished rural communities and has been operating in Nuwakot for several years.  The old capital of Nepal, Nuwakot is rich in cultural heritage and many important historical monuments and temples remain, but the people who live in the surrounding area are amongst the country’s poorest. One of the programme’s main priorities is education, working closely with the local secondary school, and also by providing vocational training to young adults along with skill development for all ages.  Other projects include helping to restore some of the historical buildings, such as Buddhist prayer halls, which have fallen into disrepair.
